LCD Displays

"Super" TFT Technology gives Wider Viewing Angle.

One of the major problems with conventional LCD displays has been that the viewing angleViewing angle measures readability in typical conditions. Beyond the specified viewing angle, you lose readability.

is restricted making them difficult to read unless the user is directly in front of the display. There are many occasions where this is unacceptable, for instance when showing on-screen information to colleagues. The Hitachi Super TFT provides a picture quality which compares favourably with high performance CRT´s.

By constructing the LCD sandwich in a unique way Hitachi has greatly improved the viewing angleViewing angle measures readability in typical conditions. Beyond the specified viewing angle, you lose readability.

. Conventionally the liquid crystal molecules are activated by an electric field generated between transparent electrodes on the top and bottom faces. When switched fully on, the crystals rotate from lying parallel to the screen to a perpendicular orientation.

The Super TFT uses simple metal electrodes on the TFT substrate and constrains the molecules to rotate while remaining parallell to the screen. The `end-on´ crystals of the conventional LCD are far more sensitive to viewing angle than Hitachi´s flat crystals - the Super TFT maintains its brightness, contrast and colour fidelity to a much wider viewing angle.

16.19 Million Colours
One disadvantage of most LCD based monitors is that they can only display a restricted colour palette, making them unsuitable for multimedia and some graphics applications. Hitachi´s Super TFT monitor does not suffer from these limitations.

The latest low voltage data drivers can directly produce 64 grey levels per picture element or 262k colours. Hitachi´s Super TFT screen achieves 16.19 million colours by using space modulated Frame Rate Control (FRC). This technique further subdivides the 64 grey levels by making small local changes to the signal levels from one frame to the next. By this method an effective 256 grey levels per picture element are possible giving a total display capability of 16.19 million colours.
