Help us supply you with the right
display. What are your display board requirements?
- What's
the 'right' display?
The starting
point is to consider what is to be shown on the displays. The form and
quantity of information to be displayed should be the prime factor in
choosing the hardware, this in turn is affected by the target audience.
It is very easy to buy a display and then wonder what to put on it,
often this leads to disappointment when it is found that the display is
not suitable for the content selected or that purchasing the
information and interfacing to it is going to be a larger part of the
budget than anticipated.
- So,
who is the target audience?
The target
audience is important as this affects the size and resolutionThe
ability of a display to show the fine details in an image.
Click link for more info required. If displays
are to be viewed by people who are sitting or
standing the main consideration is how far away they are. As they are
stationary they have the time to read and digest the information
presented
to them and the main consideration is readability.
If the audience is moving past the display they will
have less time to read
the display and readability becomes even more important, unless they
can
stop to read anything that catches their attention. Obviously if the
audience is walking they may be able to stop, but if they’re on an
escalator
or driving they can’t.
The things to consider here are character height,
viewing angle and viewing
exposure.
- Is
the display intended primarily as a means of imparting information or
is it a decoration?
It
may be that a display system is being considered as a way of showing a
group of people content that they all need to have readily accessible
to
them. They may need this information in order to carry out their jobs
efficiently. Alternatively the display may be intended to attract
people’s
attention, but will not be relied upon for decision making. Or the
display
may be simply a decoration or a means of advertising.
The importance of the information on the display to the target audience
may
well affect the software selected to drive the display. If the PC being
used were to break down and cease updating the display what impact
would
this have? Is a resilient system with no single point of failure
required?
Is the use of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) justified?
- Is
it the sole means of getting the information or is it an attention
grabber?
This affects the
size of display required (and possibly the need for system
resiliency). If the display is the sole means of seeing the information
it
needs to be sized to accommodate everything required. If not the sole
means
of display then it can be used to display summaries or headline
information,
with people using other means to get the detail behind the summary. It
is
also possible to display several pages of summary information in a
playlist,
reducing the size of display required but meaning people may have to
wait
for the content they are interested in to come round again.
Different pages may be scheduled to be displayed at appropriate times
of
day. In a trading environment European prices might be of importance in
the
morning but American prices during the afternoon. Rather than have all
the
prices of interest displayed, even when no trading is taking place,
various
layouts can be created showing only the prices from actively trading
locations at the required times.
- Where
is the information coming from?
From a system
perspective this is the important question. Who is providing
the information? For news or trading data a data vendor needs to be
selected and an agreement made for the supply of the relevant
information
and to allow its display in the intended manner. How the information
will
be delivered is also relevant, can it be reformatted the way you want
to see
it?
For scrolling
ticker displays, multi-line
displays or graphical
displays a
software interface may need to be written unless the data vendor can
supply
a means of putting the data into an Excel spreadsheet or has a DDE
server
available. For LED video, plasma or LCD displays the data
vendor may
provide terminal software that can be used to create and edit the
required
display layouts.
For locally provided information someone within the
organisation needs to be
identified to create the content. This could range from simply typing
in
messages to creating graphics, animation or video to suit. Maybe your
organisation already uses an agency for similar work, in which case
they
could fulfil this requirement.
Identifying a source and supply of the information for the display is
as
important as selecting the right type of display.
- Now
you can consider the type of display you need
If you’re looking
for a display to give movement and create interest, but
the information doesn’t need to be constantly visible a scrolling
ticker
could be the right display. These are available to display text only or
text and simple graphics in monochrome, tri-colour or full colour.
Typical
uses are to display welcome messages, branding, stock prices or news
headlines. Tri-color tickers are often used to show stock prices for
general interest with the colour giving a feel of the general movement
of
the market. Graphics can be used to display the logo of the company
whose
price follows, and colour and enabling prices of interest to be quickly
identified.
For branding and corporate use indoor tickers can be
mounted vertically,
creating a whole range of architectural possibilities around lift
shafts,
stairwells, etc.
If the information needs to be instantly available
and readily identifiable
then a multi-line display might be the best choice. These are available
in
single or tri-color form, allowing the use of colour to impart
additional
information such as market movement. They present text in an easily
readable and highly visible form in a variety of ambient lighting
situations.
The addition of graphics on a graphical display can
bring the information to
life. Depending on the resolution of the display simple graphs can be
displayed to illustrate price movement. Alternatively the information
can
be branded with company logos.
The selection of a video
display (LED, plasma or LCD) enables the display of
animations and video as well as textual and graphical information.
Whilst
text can be displayed on a video display it is generally less readable
than
on a multi-line text display unless careful attention is paid to
formatting.
- How
and where will the display be mounted?
There are several
options for mounting displays. They can be fixed directly
to load bearing walls or suspended from ceilings or mounted in frames
which
can be floor standing or ceiling hung. Whatever the positioning
requirement
we can probably find a mounting solution!
One factor that should be borne in mind when
considering the positioning is
accessibility for maintenance. Whilst access may only be required
occasionally it can be inconvenient (and expensive) to require
qualified
abseilers to perform repairs!
